MOSS

Soft Robot for Soil Restoration

Published
2024
Material
Living moss, biodegradable biomaterial, reusable electronic core

MOSS is a biodegradable soft robot designed for the restoration of heavy metal contaminated soil. Covered with living moss, it can be deployed by drone, detect highly polluted areas and move across the land to support targeted remediation. As the moss absorbs and accumulates heavy metals, the biomaterial body gradually decomposes and supports further plant growth.

Rather than treating a robot as a permanent mechanical object, MOSS is designed as part of a living cycle. Its electronic components are concentrated in a reusable core, while the remaining body returns to the site after use. The project explores how robotics, biomaterials and biological growth can work together as one ecological system.
